UFC bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes was the underdog coming into UFC 207 last Friday against former champ Ronda Rousey. As we all know Nunes stopped the former champ in 40 seconds and now Rousey has lost two straight and is at a crossroads in her career.
Dana White was with Rousey backstage and talked about how she was handling the defeat on FOX Sports 1 on the UFC 207 post-fight show.
“Obviously, the biggest shocker of the night was Ronda Rousey getting finished in 40 seconds. It was crazy. When I walked out of the arena people were crying tonight. I’ve been with her this whole time She is so competitive. She’s devastated. But she’s a lot better than she was in the Holly Holm fight. She was backstage and obviously she is upset. But she’s got a lot of support with her and I think it’s going to be a lot better than the Holly fight.”
Rousey could decide to fight again or she could have up the gloves and walk away. You certainly can’t blame her if she wants to retire. Rousey made a lot of money over the years and got a check for $3 million after getting knocked out at UFC 207. In addition to her fight purses Rousey has made millions in endorsements from companies like Metro PCS and Pantene. She’s also appeared in movies as well so Rousey is not hurting for cash.
“Rowdy” released a statement to ESPN on Saturday and made it clear she didn’t know what was next after two straight losses in the UFC.
I want to say thank you to all of my fans who have been there for me in not only the greatest moments but in the most difficult ones. Words cannot convey how much your love and support means to me.
Returning to not just fighting, but winning, was my entire focus this past year. However, sometimes — even when you prepare and give everything you have and want something so badly — it doesn’t work how you planned. I take pride in seeing how far the women’s division has come in the UFC and commend all the other women who have been part of making this possible, including Amanda.
I need to take some time to reflect and think about the future. Thank you for believing in me and understanding.
If Rousey wanted to try her hand at pro wrestling Vince McMahon would welcome her with open arms. His daughter, Stephanie is a huge fan of Rousey and even go her to make an appearance at Wrestlemania 31 in 2015. Rousey and the Rock did a skit with Steph and her husband Triple H. Rousey took out the two heels and left the ring to a big ovation from the crowd.
Stay tuned. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Rousey.
