Watch ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ on Redbox instead of the theater

Sunday, December 15th, 2013

A lot of Tolkein fans have been waiting for ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ ever since last year when we got the first part of the Hobbit trilogy last Christmas. Peter Jackson is back at the helm of the film to show us what is going on with Bilbo and company as they head to face Smaug in the second installment.

The reviews are mixed as you can see below but the film was just released out on Netflix and you can now watch it on your computer. Check out the Netflix below to watch it with a free trial.

it’s merely somewhat better than last year’s meandering dud — a slight improvement on a movie that should have been pretty easy to improve upon. With the exposition out of the way in Peter Jackson’s for-some-reason-a-trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, this middle chapter has no excuse for being so inert.

Something of a mixed bag, then, with several question marks left hanging over the entire Hobbit project, but a definite improvement on the previous outing, and hopefully a portent of better things to come in There and Back Again.

I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. By the time the film ends, in a rather abrupt climax, you’ve forgiven its faults, and you’ll be eager to see how it all ends. Until next year then…

Unlike the end of the first film, which was met with a collective shrug and not much interest in whether or not Jackson ever returns to the franchise, I would have watched next Christmas’s third “Hobbit” entry directly following this one. It’s that good.

There you go. The reviews are all over the place.
